Saturday 8th March is International Women’s Day. To celebrate this a unique international event will take place when brewsters (female brewers) in countries across the globe brew the same beer recipe on the same day. The beer is called ‘Unite Pale Ale’, it is 4% ABV, and is hopped with the Cascade hops. The beer will be available as cask ale in selected pubs around the country, and some of the breweries will also bottle their brew. A proportion of beer sales will be donated to a charity of the brewsters’ choice.
The idea for this collaboration was Sophie de Ronde’s, head brewer of Brentwood Brewing Company in Essex who recruited members of Project Venus and Pink Boots Society in America to participate. At the time of writing 66 breweries in Britain, Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, and the USA are taking part and inviting beer loving women intrigued by the idea of brewing to join them for the most sociable of brew days. We have invited women who we either work with professionally or who regularly attend events at the brewery. We have over 20 enthusiastic women coming to help us with our brew.
The aim of the event is to raise the profile of women in the brewing industry and to enthuse about brewing and beer to women who may never have considered a career in brewing, or indeed drinking beer! Most people are unaware that women invented beer (at least 10,000 years ago) and for millennia were the primary brewers of beer. In Britain, men have dominated the brewing industry only since the 15th century, but beer was first brewed in Britain at least 4,000 years ago. Women brewing beer is nothing new.
